Before You Hire a DJ

BEFORE YOU HIRE A DJ

Look for a dj that will match their level of interaction with your event.
You will want to find a dj that will match their interaction level and stage personality to your event. At an event like a company picnic, bar or Christmas party, you will probably look for an outgoing dj that is highly interactive. For an event like a wedding reception you will likely want a disc jockey that is less interactive and takes a more formal approach. That dj should take the time to find out how much interaction is required at your event.

Check for references.
Get several references from previous events and weddings. Try to get referrals for recent events. Referrals are the life blood of the dj industry. Trust the comments for previous clients.

Make sure they use professional equipment.

There is a tremendous difference in quality and reliability between home stereo equipment and professional dj equipment. Also make sure that the dj company has some sort of a back up system and a backup dj.

What you can expect to pay.

The dj fee is affected by location, day of the week, time of day, lighting and sound requirements, and experience of the dj. On average you will pay $100 to $300 an hour for a dj with a 4 hour minimum. Try to book a dj that will not try to get more money if they stay longer. There should be a beginning and end time to the dance. Diner music is usually extra, but you will want the dj company set-up before your guests arrive.

Get it in writing.

Protect yourself and get it in writing. Make sure that you have a signed contract with the dj company that states:
-Time of your event (start and end)
-Date of your event
-Name of location
-Hours of performance
-Price (total price)
-Deposit required and the date it is due
-Name and contact information of the dj
-Cancellation requirements
-Due date of the final payment

Find a dj company that you feel comfortable with.
Above all else, find a dj that you feel comfortable with and that will work with you to create a wonderful night for you and your guests.
