These days if you are not fundraising online your not fundraising. Non-profit
organizations are fast learning that the web is an awesome source for creating new
methods of funding, yet their websites still lack one key feature we believe is essential to
your non-profit's success in online fundraising.

The only way to make your website a successful source of funding is to make sure that
your supporters and potential supporters visit it, and visit it often. In web design we call
that "stickiness". So how do you create stickiness? Stickiness naturally comes when your
website creates an environment that offers your supporters services they want and need
each and every day.

Among all the other things that your non-profit website must be why can't it be a
community portal for your members and supporters? What I mean by a community portal
is a website that offers your supporters a community interaction with the rest of your
supporters. A section of your website that speaks directly to them and lets them speak to
you and to other supporters. Too expensive you say? Not with today's web 2.0
technology.

There are many ways to create such a page, but lets start with the supporters homepage.
This page would be designed to entice your supporter to set this as their browser's
homepage. So lets look at other types of sites who have the same purpose. Take a look at
the Yahoo homepage. What kind of features does it offer? Search, news, email,
interaction. Check out a sample non-profit website with these features at

There are many options to offering your supporters search engine results right on your
website. Best of all they can create income from their searches. Make sure that your new
supporters web page has a money making search engine front and center.

News is another feature that will keep your supporters coming back day after day. This
feature is two fold. Bringing in outside news from your favorite news website is as easy as
RSS. Utilizing their RSS feed your site can have actively changing content without your
staff ever lifting a finger. Another great news source is your membership. Create a page
where your members can submit organization relevant articles. This not only will keep
them coming back to see what others have found, but they too will submit articles.

How about offering your supporters a free email service? it is possible to offer such a
service at no cost to you. In fact if your organization is large enough this can actually
become another source of income. Check into it you might be surprised what you find.
Remember, many people check their email daily or more. So they will be back on your site
often.

Interaction can be created through forums, chat rooms, news submissions, and more. All
are easily set-up and create an great source of content for the search engines. Search
engines love forums because of their high rate of change. This means search engines may
send you more traffic too. More traffic means more members and more donations.

Oh, by the way, Make sure you have a way to make a donation directly on this page. You
might be surprised at how often you get a donation that you otherwise would not have.

One last thing. This page is also a page that you might consider selling advertising. Most of
us wouldn't think of selling adverting on any other page of our website, but this page is
different. Just consider it.

In the end a great site is only as good as the number of visitors who see it. If you create a
site that your supporters want to come to and participate in you will be more successful in
your online fundraising.
